| Solar for Businesses
Led by U.S. industry stalwarts such as General Motors, Google, FedEx, Merck, Microsoft, and Walgreens, the U.S. market for solar powered electricity systems is expected to soar to $4.2 billion by 2010.
About Commercial Installations
"No Downside" Large and small businesses are choosing to power part or all of their electrical needs with solar. One example, at Whole Foods, solar cells are providing about 10% of the energy used in three stores and in one warehouse. “There’s just no downside,” said Jennifer McDonnell, green mission specialist for the company in a New York Times article, October 21, 2006.
Green is good Going green is keynote in many companies as a way of reaching out to their communities, the stockholders and other stakeholders. And choosing to save on their electric bills in the process of doing something good for the planet is a win/win for everyone involved.

Financial Incentives for Commercial Solar •Through LIPA’s Solar Entrepreneur Program, you can substantially reduced the cost of your PV system. Beginning March 1, 2010, LIPA offers $2.50 per watt toward the installation of a commercial PV system up to a 50 kW size -- that’s up to $25,000 cash back off the top for installation of a 10-kilowatt system, for example -- with $1.00 per watt for a system size greater than 50 kW up to a maximum of 100 kW, not to exceed the gross system cost. See LIPA PV Rebate Availability. Note: There will be a total of four-1 Mega Watt blocks. The first-tier rebate level amounts will drop 25 cents for every megawatt sold; The second-tier rebate level will not change.
• Credits/Buybacks: Through LIPA's Solar Entrepreneur Program, net metering is now offered on commercial applications, a benefit previously only available to residential systems. The solar power your system collects runs your LIPA meter backwards whenever there is any excess, and you are credited for that excess energy production as it goes back to the LIPA grid, for use on cloudy days or at night.
• 30% Federal Tax Credit: A 30% federal business tax credit is offered, with no cap. In January 2009, this provision was extended for eight years. Talk to you accountant or tax advisor. Act now to schedule your PV installation to take advantage of this opportunity.
• No Sales Tax: The cost of a PV system is free of New York State sales tax, as well as Nassau or Suffolk county sales tax.
• Accelerated Depreciation: Businesses may also take advantage of accelerated depreciation on their solar equipment purchase, meaning the payback is often faster than on a residential purchase. Consulting with a tax advisor about applicable tax law and accelerated depreciation schedules is recommended.
