Solar for Non-Profits Expertise Built Well Solar has completed or is in the process of completing several solar installations for churches, libraries, and other non-profits across Long Island. As a result, they understand the unique requirements and procedures involved in these types of installations, including financing and the LIPA rebate process. For more information and to have your place of worship or other non-profit site evaluated for solar, contact Built Well Solar at (516) 695-1000 or by e-mail.
Financial Incentives for Non-Profits LIPA cash rebates: With cash rebates that LIPA offers to non-profits, such as schools and churches, as well as to municipalities, the price of a PV system is substantially reduced. As of March 1, 2010, solar program rebates for municipalities and
non-profits are $3.50 per watt for a system size up to 50kW with a maximum of $175,000; $2.00
per watt for system size greater than 50 kW up to 100kW (maximum size eligible for rebates), up to a maximum of $100,000 or 65% of installed costs, whichever is less. (Additional maximum rebate exclusions apply according to LIPA per metered account to not exceed 100 kW DC or 65% of the installed costs, whichever is less. The rebate will remain at the current level until 1 megawatt (1,000 kilowatts) of photovoltaic systems until this limit has been reached, and then the first tier rebate will reduce by 25 cents per watt. The second tier rebate shall remain unchanged.) See the LIPA website for latest information, http://www.lipower.org/commercial/nfp/solar-rebates.html.
• Credits/Buybacks: Net metering is now offered for all applications. The solar power your system collects runs your
LIPA meter backwards whenever there is any excess, and you are credited
for that excess energy production as it goes back to the LIPA grid, for
use on cloudy days or at night toward the total annual usage amount.
• Unique Financing for Schools: For schools financing a solar-electric installation may be accomplished using one or a combination of three options: 1. Energy Performance Contracts –Solar power is often installed as part of an overall Energy Performance Contract, which ultimately can pay for itself in energy cost savings. 2. EXCEL Aid – Capital improvements, including energy-related projects, are eligible for the EXpanding our Children’s Education and Learning (EXCEL) aid. 3. State Aid –Capital projects such as the installation of a solar-electric system are state “aidable”.
