Built Well Solar, NYIT Solar Decathlon Sponsor
Built Well Solar Corp. is proud to be a sponsor of New York Institute of Technology’s 2007 Solar Decathlon team.
NYIT is one of only 20 college teams chosen from around the globe —and
the only school from the New York metropolitan area—to compete in the
2007 Solar Decathlon. In addition to Built Well Solar being one of the
major solar sponsors, consultants from the company serve as hands-on, on-site advisors to the students currently working to design, build, and operate a functional home powered entirely by the sun.
The
home’s 40-foot by12-foot adjustable living area allows the occupant to
freely arrange and manipulate the open space environment and interior
furniture elements, while maintaining at its core the essentials for
living—kitchen, bathroom, storage, and mechanical and electrical
systems.
About the Solar Decathlon The event is
sponsored biannually by the US Department of Energy and the National
Renewable Energy Laboratory. The competition challenges college and
university students to design, build, and operate the most attractive
and energy-efficient functional home powered entirely by the sun.
Teams
are judged in 10 contests, which include architecture; engineering;
market viability; communications; comfort zone; appliances; hot water;
lighting; energy balance; and getting around. The teams transported
their completed solar homes from their respective campuses to the
National Mall in Washington D.C., forming a “solar village" during the week of Oct. 12 - 20, 2007. The solar village was
open for public tours. Winners were announced Oct. 19. The NYIT team came in 12th, but it was a great accomplishment all the same. In fact, the NYIT house earned high marks for two main disciplines of study for which the college is known. It came in 6th for architecture and 7th in engineering/
The team’s goal is to inform,
educate and raise public awareness about alternative and renewable
energy sources, sustainable design and reducing the environmental
impact of conventional construction.
