Why solar makes even greater sense on Long Island:

• High electric rates. Long Island ‘s electric rates are
among the highest in the nation, and have climbed
an average of 7% annually over the past decade as
the cost of fossil fuels that generate electricity
skyrocketed.
• Generous rebates. A substantial portion of the cost
of a residential or business solar-electric
(photovoltaic or PV) system on Long Island is made
up with rebates from the Long Island Power
Authority (LIPA). Currently, LIPA rebates are set at
$3.50 per watt. That’s $35,000 cash back for a
10-kilowatt residential or commercial system. (Rebates for non-profits are set even higher at $4.50 per watt.)

• Other financial incentives. Federal and state tax credits, and state and county sales tax exemptions are
available for solar installations. There is also a 15-year state real property tax exemption for the increased
assessed value a solar system provides.
• Grid relief. Remember the regional outages caused by too much drain on the power grid? By installing
solar, the electricity you use comes from the sun, not the grid. And, any solar power you don’t use goes
back to the grid to help alleviate overload and you are credited for that!
• For our children. Probably the best reason is it’s the right thing to do for future generations. With all the
recent media coverage on global warming and Americans’ ongoing disproportionate consumption of fossil
fuels, you can proudly say  you are part of the solution when you install solar. Renewable energy is the right
decision for our children and the generations to come, particularly in view of preserving Long Island’s
precious natural resources.
• Emerging status symbol. Many celebrities have embraced the idea of using solar energy as their way of
saving the earth — it’s fast becoming a status symbol from Hollywood to the Hamptons, from Malibu
to Montauk.
